BOTANICAL IDENTITY
The right name is the first step.
Also known as: blackcurrant
The botanical name and part used must match the profile; a photograph alone is not sufficient grounds for consuming a plant.
An illustration is not enough to identify a plant for consumption. Do not forage for a species based solely on this profile.
01 · UNDERSTAND
Properties & uses.
Urinary comfort
Traditional use promoting urine volume in minor complaints.
Read the sourceThe traditional uses described are not clinical proof of effectiveness. Evidence for one preparation cannot automatically be applied to another.
02 · UNDERSTAND THE ACTION
How does the plant act?
Blackcurrant leaf differs from the fruit and seed oil, which have different compositions and uses. Two traditional areas are recognized: minor joint pain and urinary flushing as support for minor complaints. Experimental anti-inflammatory observations make some uses plausible, without establishing the clinical efficacy of a herbal tea against joint disease.
Constituents to know.
Their presence and quantity depend on the plant part and preparation.
- Flavonoids and other polyphenols
- The leaf contains quercetin, kaempferol and myricetin derivatives; measuring these compounds also serves quality control.Read the reference
Joint comfort
Leaf preparations have traditional use for minor joint pain; this does not mean they modify osteoarthritis or arthritis.
Read the referenceUrinary elimination
Traditional use aims to increase urine output with appropriate fluid intake; it is unsuitable when fluids are restricted.
Read the referenceWhat this means for preparation.
A “blackcurrant” profile is only useful if it specifies leaf, fruit or oil. Increased urine output does not justify use to treat cardiac or renal edema.
03 · EXAMINE THE EVIDENCE
What the research shows.
A laboratory or animal result alone does not demonstrate a benefit in humans. Each result must be read alongside the preparation studied and its limitations.
From laboratory to use
- Type of research
- EMA review of in vitro/in vivo experiments and traditional documentation.
- Preparation concerned
- Ribes nigrum leaf, extracts and powder depending on the preparations.
- Observed results
- Pharmacological results support plausibility, but no sufficient clinical data establish efficacy.
- Limitations to consider
- No constituent is recognized as solely responsible for the therapeutic action; data on the berry or oil do not automatically supplement this dossier.
What can we take from this?
There is no evidence here of an effect comparable to cortisone. A red, hot, swollen or persistently painful joint requires advice.
